Due to the cancellation of the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting, award winners from this year were recognized during the 2021 AERA Division K Annual Meeting. The interviews below highlight the success of two 2020 Career Award winners: Dr. Gholdy Muhammad and Dr. Cheryl Matias . Read on to learn more about these intelligent women, their current research endeavors, and their advice for graduate students and new professors. Dr. Gholdy Muhammad 2020 AERA Division K Early-Career Award During the AERA 2021 Virtual Conference, Dr. Gholdy Muhammad received the 2020 AERA Early-Career Award during the Division K business virtual meeting. While, Dr. Muhammad introduced herself during the meeting and graciously accepted the award, AERA Division K’s GSEB invited her to share a little more about herself for this blog post. Dr. Muhammad’s award-winning work exemplifies her dedication to literacy development and writing practices in Black communities. In 2020, she released her first book Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy. When describing the individuals who have most influenced her journey, Dr. Muhammad refers to her two mothers. For her, these women have modeled the importance of keeping Islam first and following the footsteps of their excellent ancestors. She explains that Islam especially has been the center of her progress and success. Her faith keeps her lifted while centering her thinking and understanding about literacy, education and anti-oppression. Some of the challenges Dr. Muhammad has faced thus far are anti-Black racism and folks not supporting her work until she sold copies of her book. She combatted these hardships by seeking advisement and mentorship from other Black women and by keeping detailed time-stamp records of all racism she’s experienced to submit to folks in the chance they try to interrupt her work. Finally, Dr. Muhammad has always held firm to believing in her own work. Moving forward, Dr. Muhammad is penning her second book which focuses on curriculum design and development. She is also supporting schools who have adopted her culturally and historically responsive model for pedagogy. For graduate students and new professors, Dr. Muhammad offers three pieces of advice. First, stay true to your real purpose- to serve youth and to better education and communities. Next, seek the proper village of brothers and sisters who will lift and support you in this work. Last, always believe in your work, even when others don't. If you would like to hear more from Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, you can follow her on Instagram (@gholdy.m) and Twitter (@GholdyM). Dr. Cheryl Matias 2020 AERA Division K Mid-Career Award During the AERA 2021 Virtual Conference, Dr. Cheryl Matias received the 2020 AERA Mid-Career Award during the Division K business virtual meeting. Dr. Matias introduced her three children to the audience during her acceptance speech, and the “motherscholar”—a term that stems from Zeus Leonardo’s concept of raceclass—gave thanks for her award and the gift of her children. AERA Division K’s GSEB invited Dr. Matias to share a little more about herself for this blog post. Dr. Matias’ award-winning work exemplifies her dedication to uncovering Whiteness in education. In 2021, the “motherscholar” added to her substantial repertoire, a third book, Critical Theoretical Research Methods in Education. This book complements her other titles, Feeling White: Whiteness, Emotionality, and Education and Surviving Becky(s): Pedagogies for Deconstructing Whiteness and Gender. Dr. Matias admits that being a woman, and a woman of Color, means that certain obstacles are guaranteed to create challenges. She offers an empowering perspective towards life's roadblocks; Dr. Matias says, “Obstacles are not for overcoming. Rather, they are a reminder for perseverance: Refuse to give up!” Dr. Matias has been influenced by Zeus Leonardo, Charles Mills, and Christine Sleeter because of their work and the people they are—prolific scholars and amazing human beings. For graduate students and new professors, Dr. Matias offers this advice: remember that you possess intrinsic value. She suggests you relinquish the need for external validation as you research and work. Instead, she encourages you to center what you are doing according to personal high standards, and not let others’ negativity dissuade you from your goals nor allow positive accolades motivate you. When Dr. Matias is not working, she can be found doing yoga, performing as a Bachata ballroom dancer, or enjoying a Lakers game (she’s quite the fan). You can find Dr. Cheryl Matias on her website http://www.cherylmatias.com. Here is an opportunity to set up a Division K-Sponsored Little Free Library in a local community. Division K Fireside Chat Each Division’s Representatives collaborate to propose and plan the annual Division’s Fireside Chat specifically to address the needs and interests of their graduate student membership. What is the topic of the 2017 Division K’s Fireside Chat? Session Title: Navigating the Terrain of Teacher Education: Multiple Trajectories for Prospective Teacher Educators As teacher education is moving away from traditional university settings, diverse trajectories for teachers and teacher educators have emerged. From alternative certification programs, to charter school expansion, teachers and teacher educators are charged to navigate a tumultuous reality. Looking at the context of AERA’s host city (San Antonio) as an example, in 2011, there were 8,072 teachers that completed an alternative program compared to 11,502 teachers that completed a traditional program in Texas. With the number of teachers completing alternative certification routes quickly catching up with traditional routes, teacher educators in university settings must negotiate their shifting role(s). To understand the lay of this land, we bring together a panel of senior scholars in teacher education who represent diverse international and local perspectives. Exploring how structural, sociopolitical, and programmatic conditions impact the work of prospective teacher educators, we examine how these issues manifest from the local context of San Antonio, TX to international insights for future teacher educators, and how they respond to community dynamics to ensure equal educational access for all students. This session explores the challenges to university-based teacher education within a complicated political climate, and the role of developing teacher educators navigating the larger terrain in which university-based teacher education operate. Through an intimate discussion with senior scholars who have expertise in diverse pathways of teacher education, we examine the work of teacher educators committed to transforming inequitable schooling within the current sociopolitical climate. Moving from local perspectives in San Antonio, TX to the global perspectives on teacher education, we aim foster a mentorship and dialog with graduate students attempting to navigating the current terrain of teacher education. Why should graduate students attend the Division K Fireside Chat? AREA’s GSC Fireside Chats are a great opportunity hear from senior scholars in a more intimate graduate student-specific setting. This year Division K’s Fireside Chat will be have diverse opportunities to learn from and with with our invited speakers in both small and whole group conversations. In addition to discussing the topic of the session, the Fireside Chat is an opportunity connect with other graduate students interested teacher education, meeting your representatives, and learn about ways to get involved within Division K. Where and when will the 2017 Division K Fireside Chat take place? Date: Sunday, April 30, 2017 Time: 10:35am to 12:05pm Location: Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Second Floor, Bowie B Where can additional information about other Division Fireside Chats be found?

Greetings Scholars, Teachers, Students, and Activists: The Division K Affirmative Action Committee has recently undergone a name change by the AERA organization. In 2016, the AERA Affirmative Action Council proposed changing the name to respond to the evolving mission of the organization related to issues of access, equity, and social justice. In February, the AERA Governance approved the name change, and we are now effectively the Equity and Inclusion Committee (EIC). The Co-Chairs of EIC are Drs. Gholnecsar “Gholdy” Muhammad, Assistant Professor at Georgia State University and Marcelle Haddix, Associate Dean’s Professor at Syracuse University. Both Chairs are teacher educators of language and literacy and are deeply committed to research and educational practices that advance issues of equity, justice and criticality. One of the main objectives for the EIC is to promote and monitor equity and encourage diversity in teaching and teacher education research and scholarship within the Division. Each year, EIC Co-Chairs and members of Division K work collectively to lead efforts toward increasing the active participation from scholars from underrepresented communities through developing and sponsoring research talks, local community events, and mentoring and funding opportunities. One of our activities at the annual conference includes organizing a provocative and timely special talk around issues of equity. This year’s EIC special session is entitled: #NoMoreHashtags: Disrupting and Interrupting Systemic Racism in Teaching and Teacher Education. This talk is a continuation of the conversation from last year’s dialogue about the Black Lives Matter movement and the role of teaching, teacher education and educational research. This event is timely as the historical lynching of Black lives is inextricably tethered to the physical, spiritual and cultural apartheid subjected upon Black youth in America. As communities of color are under siege, it is important that educators, community members, and researchers reflect upon their responsibilities as change agents. This session will feature a talk by best selling author and researcher, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss how our knowledge translates to real action within communities. This session will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 2:45 to 4:15pm at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Second Floor, Lone Star Ballroom Salon A. ADDITIONAL 2017 SESSION OF INTEREST We also encourage you to attend the Equity and Inclusion Council Open Meeting: A Multidisciplinary Discussion on How Scholars Successfully Negotiate an Inclusive, Socially Just Research Agenda, Friday, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Third Floor, Bonham D. 2017 EIC AWARD TRAVEL RECIPIENTS
